The database includes records of mining induced displacement and resettlement events. Records are structured around “events” rather than “mining projects” on the basis that a mining project will often undertake, or induce, several displacements over the course of its lifecycle. In this dataset each instance of displacement is treated as an “event”.
MIDR events are under-reported and scholars have called for improved visibility over how mining companies exercise their responsibilities in resettling project affected peoples. This dataset was compiled for researchers, government officials, lenders, company personnel, employees of non-government organisations, and members of the general public to support increased awareness about mining induced displacement and resettlement.
Records cover all geographic regions and includes historic cases. The database contains entries for 270 MIDR events. Many of the fields in the dataset are incomplete, but have been included to highlight the effect of company non-disclosure on building a public record of displacement events associated with the industry. The records were compiled by researchers at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, at the University of Queensland between 2016 and 2019.
